Down south

For this year’s thanksgiving celebrations we headed down to Atlanta: to visit with E-E, Oompa and the Mannes family.  Upon our arrival, after neko inspected every inch of the fine Newark airport, and proceeded to stick every barbie, dora and kitten puffy sticker available for purchasing in Brooklyn, she repeated (and I mean loudly):  E-E, yeah, bait…E-E, yeah, bait  (bait=house) the entire 45 minute ride home.

Oddly enough, she did not let go of my thigh, knee, foot or anything she could grab from her shrimpy height, for the rest of the week.

We began the festivites with a visit to the Atlanta Aquarium, where neko held hands (how come she never agrees to hold my hands when running the sidewalk?) with her cousin Fopha (Sophie) and Clawa (Clara)..yeah (she likes to say that now and we think it means let’s go, i want, or this is great)…and pointed at the shish (fish) and turta (turtle)…..

Riding high Three little fish Fish tank blur Glowing Jellys White jelly Flying fish Holding hands

I think her favorite was the petting pool, where she got to touch starfish (nice) and random icky sticky things.  and yes, she licked her hands right after wards….

Later that day:

Take a lick Pink plastic heaven Brothers Poop hide Girls and pink Next year's costume? Mischief Sophie Popha Curtains Melted soldiers

Neko is ecstatic, yelling (well, you know, she’s half Israeli) at Sophie to be by her side at all times.  Playing with every piece of pink plastic goodness around, and loving it.  The hours spent with older girls have added at least 82 words to her vocabulary and she says mini sentences now: hold dis and mo muchis pease (music please) or aaachu (from the sneezing cow book) and nice shuz (she still does the french pucker lip thing) and no stuck (as in do not help me out i like being in this position)…and the best: boogy (sticking finger in nose) followed by an adult fake laugh….

One year ago: Thanksgiving in Hamburg

Doin it yellow style

Ahhhh - alone at last.

I get some (much needed - the guilt levels are high this week) quality time with my babe this weekend, as Peter is off avec Mr. Franck to sell pickles and giggles at the Rosendale Pickle Festival (no, I kid you not - they even sell fried pickles there)…This is a friendly favor for good old expecting twins Rick’s Picks.

We kicked off the weekend with some cookies….ooops…no, Peter, no no no cookies, just some fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables….

We spent the day at Yellow Park (known as such because of equipment’s main color and where Lilly Taylor hangs), where neko collected leaves with Louise (notice her flair for wearing a scarf well started young).  Neko has been showing real signs of love and social desire and it’s cool to see her try to communicate in her heblish.

We even had a guest of honor - the now officially Jewish and seriously cute Isaac.

Looking into the future Louise avec scarf - ze french way Ride horsey Looking for louise Even Isaac joins us

Isaac: next time we’ll let you lick the garbage cans too….

Mazal Tov Regina

Here is a birthday wish from one mother to another (who happens to be her incredibly gorgeous 60 year old mom):

I hope one day to be as strong as you and yet effortlessly feminine

I hope to be half as good of a mother as you, if not half the great baker

I hope to be able to stand by my opinions, but know when to just be supportive (as you do)

I am proud to be your daughter and hope you feel and know how much I love you….

Happy birthday mama!

It happened

In every adult’s life there comes that special day, that incredible moment -  the realization that they have become their parents.

Nothing makes that more obvious that having a child of your own.

We fuss, we do things we swore deep in our childish hearts (and on the shrink sofa) we would never do.

For me, such a moment happened today (there have been many in the past - ask my sister about talking with the finger)…..

I had a few minutes in between meetings =  go to starbucks for bad expensive coffee and free wifi.

what did I do with those precious minutes?  Yeah, you guessed it, I looked at pictutes of my daughter, obsessing over every detail of her hair (will it be curly or straight?), skin (is it a little dry lately?), development (is it ok that she no longer meows for cat?) and growth (is it ok she will only eat avocado and cookies?)

But that’s not the story: they were playing, now, Saba Chaim, this is for you, Weather Report (Birdland - I llooked it up), and I liked it.

I wanted to stay there and be all sentimental and move my foot to the music.

Oy - pappi, what have you done to me?

Cookie love

And, will i do it to neko too?

Franck’s 29th Birthday

It’s that time of year again.

No, not time to wear ugly Cosby reindeer sweaters or drink that hobnob stuff.

It’s Franck’s eternal 29th birthday.

We spent the weekend celebrating in style:  eating, drinking beer, eating, chasing our daughters, and oh, eating.

Neko exhibited the beginnings of social normalcy: she loved having Elodie around, almost too much, calling for her (Eh-yodie) and begging for her to keep up and always be by her side.  She didn’t hit Elodie once (shoving doesn’t count and neither does a toy hammer).  Watching the two play and get each other excited (demonstrated by jerking their little bodies from knees upwards) was totally inspiring.  Yeah, it inspired me to eat half a chocolate marzipan cake!

As a show of neko’s adoration for baby eh-yodie, she woke up Monday morning in Brooklyn, sat down at her table and said: ‘eh-yodie…bo’  (bo=come in hebrew) gesturing in israeli style for her to come hither…..

Major

She did it (sing it with me)

Neko said her name

It sounded  more like ‘Noko’

I am so proud

Dress up in the morning

I wonder if she meant something else though, like the ninky nonk train from BBC?

Or maybe it’s code for: dudes, I know my name, you say it all the time, will you just leave me alone?

November Weekend

Neko was illin’, but we hearty parents decided to take her out from some fresh air.  This video, which, by the way, was both shot and edited on Peter’s iPhone, shows N in the fall splendor of Brooklyn’s playgrounds.

P.S.  For those who know me, this is my new favorite track and yes, I have it on repeat loop endlessly for the next three days; then never listen to it again ;)  Turn up the volume yo….

One long night with two short days

What’s a sure sign that winter madness is upon us?

Yes, a Saturday morning fever.

Mysterious, high and unrelenting.

All our weekend plans where canceled, and although neko’s mood propelled itself from sweet giggle filled cutie pie to devil child (ask us about saturday night’s drama-thon), we discovered a few things along the way:

1. If you pretend Baby Tylenol is yummy juice, neko will ask you for some…

2. If you caress her hair straight for a long time while watching BBC children’s shows, you will discover that it’s past her shoulders.

Hiding place Pink pijama n socks n stuff

3. If you, in total despair at no liquid or solid intake for over 24 hours go to get ice cream, neko will love it, and dance around the parlor yelling ‘gida gida’ (glida=ice cream in Hebrew) and insist, high from organic vanilla flavor that she must ‘valk, valk’ all the way home.

Playground games Vanilla sugar cone good

4.  You noticed too, neko sounds like an old Jewish lady!

Without Me

I never get sick of posting…maybe that’s not necessarily a good thing, but neko’s daily doings are getting funnier, cuter and better by the minute.

For example, today she peed in the toilet - not the little red potties we have dispersed through the house for her convenience, but insisted on sitting on the travel seat cover I got (getting ahead of myself with gear, as usual).

She peed in the toilet guys!  Woooohooooo!  Of course, now she won’t do it again until she’s 4…..

Also, today was spent mostly without me, as I went into work (on a Sunday - insanity).  Peter and neko traversed Brooklyn, avoiding those crazy runners, going from the Children’s Museum to the Prospect Park Zoo and finally ending in Carrol Park, chasing Douglas.

I met them on the way home, crazed and giddy with happiness:

Let’s get physical

I figured that in two or three years neko will march home from her excellent nursery school (wishful thinking here) and announce that she wants to be Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan or some other really appropriate role model.  Until the day my daughter wants to disguise herself as a female slut icon, we decided to have some fun: hence, the 80’s inspiration!

Where does one turn to for 80’s gear, yes, you guessed it, American Apparel, whose entire aesthetic is Olivia Newton John.  A few paper cuts and crazy glued fingers later and we have the spandex family:

We spent the day moving in between the local parades, meeting up with other kids, all running around with sugar highs:

A few lost rhinestones later, we allowed neko to stay up late, sitting on the stoop with the neighbor’s older kids (notice neko’s ecstatic face) handing out candy while ingesting some herself:

We barely got her into bed, sticky fingers, muddy behinds and sparkles are still everywhere. Now, we start planning for next year!
