Sloping

It snowed.

A lot.

Since neko woke up demanding to see Ra-Ra (actually she asked to go to her house about 13 times that morning - and it was only 7:35 am), we did what everyone else and their kids was doing that morning and headed to Prospect Park for some snow bunny action.

Neko tackled the mounds of snow without fear, rushing to taste it, falling right into it, and throwing tiny snowballs at me.  Mostly she asked for Ra-Ra, whose parents were soliciting locals for help digging themselves a parking spot:

One small step for mankind I got the boots on Running at me w/ snowball Face flat Ice cone Slip sliding Waiting for godot

Upon rara’s arrival neko became her giggly self and the two ran and up and down and all around…stopping only to snack (picture virgin white snow studded with raisins) or to lick some ice.  The sledding was not so successful (the adults totally loved it) , and even though it seemed the girls kinda liked it (no fearful crying or anyone thrown out of the plastic shield), they refused a second run….the snowball fights were a different story:

Her + Me

They say (who are these damn they anyway) that self awareness is a huge emotional developmental step in a child’s life, in essence, an understanding of themselves as separate from their mothers,a unique being with desires (tell me about it) and feelings.

Dudes!!!!

Not only does she know who is she is but introduced me to the woman sitting next to us today!

The woman politely asked neko what her name was, and before she cold shovel in any more cookies, she proudly announced ‘me noko’ and then pointed and said ‘dis ama’

She makes my heart swell…

V Day

Valentines typically is not celebrated at the Bernard Mannes household, but having neko has turned things inside out and upside down (boy you turn me).

Recently Neko has been coming home with giant construction paper hearts stuck with feathers and glitter and asking us to smell them.  Not sure why but we think that some of the stickers she gets at her classes may be the ’scratch and sniff‘ variety.  It’s either that or she is addicted to the glue.

This weekend we joined neko’s best friend, rara (surali) and some other local moms in love fest related activities:  the kids decorated heart shaped butter cookies with sugary icing (most of which was licked off the knives) and then they made cards for their fathers.  Since neko has been exhibiting ‘cleanliness‘ obsession lately (i think she just likes saying the word dirty) I wasn’t worried about her dipping her hands too deep in the finger paint (like little zoe rubbing paint all over exposed body parts) ….she made a few ‘bubbles’ with her index finger and then said ‘ ama, noko hand durty’ and then she was done…she is my child after all!

Her aba was pleasantly surprised at the ‘pesents’ as we all ate lots of sugar together!  Yeah, my two love muffins and me.

Neko Lately

She is talking up a storm.

Half of what she says is totally warbled and marbled (is that English?) but the other half is smart funny and cute.  A lot of neko’s observations are remarks on the obvious: she likes to point out that she has taken her socks off, a lot: ‘oh oh socks noko off’, she likes to rush over to the front gate and tell us about her day (like a summary report) which usually consists of ‘noko play yeah park yeah’ (it’s too cold for the park but apparently she goes there in her head) ‘rara bait’ (if she went to surali’s house) and ‘noko art cassie yeah’ (she made art in class with her teacher cassie).  Note the emphatic yeah.

She says stuff like ‘I want pesents’ (often she means she wants a reese’s pieces) and ‘I want Art’ (which means a huge mess will now ensue) or she sits and reads to herself out loud, pointing out ‘dis is’ or ‘big big’.  she screams for us to ‘wuk up’ and calls her aba ‘peta’ (to my delight but not his),  but the best is when she tells us that she is happy or funny: ‘Noko happy yeah’ or ‘Is funny’ (usually when she is doing something totally dangerous and illegal like climbing on her table and jumping) and laughs and giggles from deep in her belly, exposing her small square white teeth and her sparkly eyes.

Man, I love this kid.

Museum Madness - Part Deux

As the Bernard Mannes clan recovers from recent virus-o-rama that hit us hard, I sit here, sipping tepid water and continue the weekend cultural post.

Oh, i can’t wait till the day we take neko to a museum and actually get to look at the exhibits!

Sunday we headed to Natural History Museum to meet up with Elodie.  Neko had been demanding ‘I want Eyodie’ since we mentioned we might meet up with her in the morning.  The girls were too cute, and upon meeting each other there was bliss in neko’s face and the two held hands as they led the way:

Happy girls Holding hands We all hold hands

We proceeded to the butterfly room, a hot humid jungle like experience with the most amazingly colorful butterflies.  And although neko seemed underwhelmed by it all (it was her second time here after all) I secretly believe she was impressed by the buh-fly’s (nekoese) affinity for peter’s head:

One flew on my head Buberfly head OJ Chalaronas

Then of course elodie needed to stop and snack her weight in crackers and apples (she’s the number one eater this child):

Elodie must snack ALL the time

The rest of the time in the museum seems like a blur. I know there were birds and stuffed monkeys, evolution and giant elephants whirling by as we chased down the girls chasing each other.  Somehow we spent a lot of time laughing as they lay on the floor together, spontaneously, neko at times resting on elodie as a pillow:

Lying ON Elodie not near Bust a move Chilaxin

We did some more floor manuvers at the whale room:

But the best part was the two venuses in the giant clam shells taking a nap…yes, neko said night night and on cue the two little pearls laid down and pretended to sleep:

Man, I wish neko went to bed that easily in her comfy soft organic mattress at home!

Museum Madness - Part I

It’s serious cold outside.

The kind of cold that makes sane people stay in their sweatpants all day sipping tea, reading the times and eating chocolate chips cookies (clearly these imaginary people are not parents of active toddlerhood kids). (I want it noted that I ran 13 miles in sub zero weather this day - I know it doesn’t belong in neko’s blog but I want it known)

Since our amazing daughter will only nap in the car or in stroller (please reserve judgment to yourselves here - she slept on the sofa like twice this month) we began our weekend escape-from-the-cold-but-do-something-fun search by….yup, you guessed right, driving through the Green Wood Cemetery.  Yeah, nothing like ancient graves to take that chill out of you:

Beard Bear Close up Banana? Asleep

(What an amazing place - look out for our spring post visit to the grounds)

When the princess awoke we proceeded to the Brooklyn Museum, where I very gracefully cut the huge queue in true Israeli fashion (no way am I waiting for 45 minutes) and got us in to the exhibits.  Neko ran through the collections like a speed demon, stopping to marvel super loud WOWS at big aba or ama sculptures (her distinction for female and male) or giant offint making poop (elephant in nekoese):

Bubbly V stare Raisin-ette Signage Family in art Baby looks at baby Open up dudes Whoosh I don't get this modern art thing Doing as he's told Commander in Chief

We ended the day with some champagne and got mentally prepared for Sunday….

Which means that now I am exhausted and will return to blog-o-rama about Museum Weekend tomorrow….
